Angelology
Angelology is the study of angels, their nature, roles and significance within spiritual and religious traditions. The word is derived from the Greek angelos, meaning “messenger,” reflecting the belief that angels serve as intermediaries between the divine and humanity.
Angels appear in many belief systems, including Judaism, Christianity, Islam and various esoteric traditions. They are commonly described as spiritual beings associated with guidance, protection, wisdom and divine communication.
Different traditions recognise various orders or hierarchies of angels. These may include archangels, guardian angels and celestial choirs, each believed to fulfil specific functions. Among the most well-known archangels are Michael, Gabriel, Raphael and Uriel.
The commonly known hierarchy of angels is organised into 3 spheres. The first sphere is contains the highest order of angels:
- Seraphim: Known as the “burning ones,” these fiery, six-winged angels continually surround the throne of God and sing praises.
- Cherubim: Associated with supreme wisdom and knowledge, they are the guardians of the light and the ways of God.
- Thrones: Often appearing as glowing, multi-winged wheels, they represent God’s justice and authority, acting as the actual seats of his power.
The second sphere of angels is known as the middle sphere:
- Dominions: also known as Lordships. Dominions oversee the duties of the lower angels.
- Virtues: oversee the natural order of things, they govern the movement of the planets, stars, and the laws of nature.
- Powers: are warrior angels who deal with forces of evil and maintain balance.
The third sphere of angels is the lowest order:
- Principalities: are also known as Rulers. They watch over nations, large groups of people, and earthly institutions.
- Archangels: Chief messengers who deliver profoundly important news and lead others in the fight against evil.
- Angels: are the lowest choir and closest to the humanity. They are the messengers to individuals.
In modern spiritual practice, many people work with angels through prayer, meditation, visualisation and intuitive communication. Some believe angels provide guidance, comfort and support during challenging times, while others view them as symbolic representations of higher virtues and states of consciousness.
